China is known for their advancements in technology within the military and in the civilian sector.  Now, China has stated that they have launched research into technology and hydrogen engineering and is being promoted as a development within the military-civilian sector.

China’s Advancement Towards Hydrogen Technology

Xinhuanet reported on Wednesday that the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC) in Beijing had launched the hydrogen engineering and technology research and development center with the goal of boosting the civilian-military development regarding hydrogen technology.  The aim of the center is the promotion of the use of hydrogen widely in both civilian applications and with the national defense.

Hydrogen fuel cells and hydrogen-oxygen rocket engine are examples of why hydrogen energy has been sought after.  Hydrogen energy has previously been considered to be a promising source of clean energy due to its wide application range, wide range of sources, pollution-free, clean and its high combustion heat value.

According to Yonghua, an official with the CASC, it will also focus on storage technology and hydrogen production that has low costs but high efficiency.  He added that technical support will be provided by the center regarding the industrial chain of hydrogen applications.

Fuel Cell and Hydrogen Technology

When it comes to hydrogen energy technology, China is hoping to use it for a variety of ways as well as making sure it is safe to use.  Westdollar.com mentioned something that might be worth noting regarding the field of fuel cell technology.  Interestingly, the Aerospace Science and Technology Group’s six institutes have technologies such as key components of pump valves, power applications for proton exchange membrane fuel cell systems and energy storage applications for renewable energy.

Previously, the research team had finished the operation of loading the original domestic vehicle high-pressure fuel cell engine while passing the full-scale two-hundred-km simulation test.  Since Yonghua said that it will concentrate on high-end technology and applications of equipment engineering within the field of utilization of hydrogen energy, it will be interesting to see if the success of developing hydrogen technology for the military and civilians eventually would find its way to a space program.

Presently, the center has more than twenty academic leaders and three academicians from the Chinese Academy of Sciences.  Apparently, under the guidance of national policies that are relevant, the United Nations has finished the key civilian and military key technologies regarding the hydrogen energy industrial chain to completely form an independent intellectual property rights.

Also established was a standard and technical system for the hydrogen energy industry chain as well as implementing the hydrogen energy utilization technology that will be widely used in civilian fields and in national defense.  Considering to be in the 21st century one of the most promising clean energy resources, hydrogen is said to have wide usage and has extensive sources which is why other nations would also benefit from it if it can be produced and utilized safely.  Obviously, the United States and other nations will be keeping a close eye on how successful China’s program becomes as well as trying to beat them to the punch.
