Japan applies new tax on travelers

Residents and visitors traveling out of Japan must now pay a departure tax of 1,000 yen, or about nine US dollars. The tax was introduced earlier this month. It’s the first new national tax levied by the government in 27 years and will be included in the price of your travel fare. Transit passengers leaving within 24 hours and children under two are exempt.
